Basking in year round sunshine, the seaside village of Yzerfontein lies 85km north of Cape Town on the R27. Closer inspection reveals that this really is a tourist's paradise.
Although traditionally known for its spectacular wildflowers, Darling has much more to offer visitors and is one hour's drive from Cape Town along the R27.
Carpaccio of springbok, crisp parcel of Fairview goats cheese, chicken and pesto pasta, pan-seared fillet of stompneus. These are a few of the mouth-watering dishes on offer at the Linen Room restaurant.
The Linen Room restaurant's Irish-born chef Ronan Boucher has introduced a high standard of culinary delight to the West Coast.
End your meal with a delicious desert of lemon meringue, iced berry parfait or decadent chocolate torte with ice cream followed by an espresso and chocolate petit fours. Whether it's a private function or a romantic dinner for two, enjoy the cosy ambience, excellent food and service, with the added bonus of easy parking. Customised menus are available on request and film crews shooting in Yzerfontein are also catered for.
Over the flower-strewn hills and red dirt roads of the little farm town of Darling, lies the farm Kraalbosdam. This historic farm has been in existence since 1832 and has been restored to its original glory by the creative Barry and Anet Burger.
The old waenhuis has been transformed into the Kraalbosdam Restaurant and is the ideal venue for weddings and other functions. The restaurant serves a delicious variety of country cuisine as well as fine wines and can comfortably accommodate 150 guests.
See Darling's 'darling'
One of Darling's most famous personalities is the well-known performer, author and satirist Pieter Dirk Uys, also known as Evita Bezuidenhout, who has been part of the local political spectrum for the last 30 years. He has converted the old railway station of Darling, where he lives, into a cabaret venue and restaurant called Evita se Perron (perron is Afrikaans for station platform) and performs there regularly. The adjacent arts and crafts market has been taken over in 2006 by the Darling Trust, a charitable organisation which addresses the problems of impoverished communities in the area through the establishment of grassroots projects.
- Evita for President is currently being presented at the Spier Amphitheatre from January 25 to 28.
