The problem with sushi - if you could call it that - is that once you've had it half price, there's just no going back.

The solution is to make sure you have a little black book full of all the places that offer half price and/or all-you-can-eat specials.

This isn't difficult, because there are loads of them, too many even for this one article. Here are a few places I've either been to recently, or go to regularly... the sushi glutton's guide.

  • Wang Thai (Lagoon Beach, 021 551 9254). Of all the places listed here, this is top of the pops for sushi in the sunshine beside the sea. The sushi is fantastic and, along with cocktails, is half price between 4pm and 6pm, Mondays to Fridays.
  • Sit inside if you must, but I recommend the large deck where the lagoon washes up virtually at your feet. The cocktails lean towards the sweet, but there's a good wine list too. The sushi is all you'd expect, and there are superb mixed platters. We loved the dragon rolls and tiger rolls... crouching and leaping, it seemed appropriate.

  • Beluga (The Foundry, Prestwich Street, Green Point, 021 418 2948/9). This is a perennial favourite for half price sushi and as far as I know, the pioneer of the concept. They keep threatening to end the special deal but, thankfully, never do. All sushi and cocktails are half price from noon till 7pm, Mondays to Saturdays and from noon till 11pm on Sundays. You simply cannot go wrong.
  • Outside tables in the courtyard are premium, but even at its busiest - and it gets crammed in good weather, so do book - you can still squeeze in at the bar to nibble on salmon roses washed down with chilled sauvignon blanc.

Besides the half price sushi, we love the blue plate special - R99 for 26 pieces of salmon and tuna sushi, nigiri, roses, sashimi, rainbow rolls and more. You can have all salmon or all tuna if the chef is in a good mood, and this one is available all day every day, even for take-away, which is why Beluga's number is programmed into my cellphone.

  • Sevruga (Quay 5, Victoria Wharf, V&A Waterfront, 021 421 5134). Beluga's sister restaurant also has a great view of the boats and bustle of the Waterfront. Here the specials require a little more attention to timing.
  • Sushi and cocktails are 25 percent off between 12pm and 2pm, and 50 percent off between 2pm and 5pm. Their plates are black and cost R109 for salmon roses, salmon tartare rolls, prawn tempura rolls, rainbow rolls and tuna and salmon sashimi - a total of 26 pieces, which, quite frankly, is just the right amount for one sitting.

  • Caviar Fine Foods (Shop 6201, V&A Waterfront, 021 418 0909. This is another sibling of Beluga and Sevruga; the name might have given it away. It's a tiny deli which sells everything you need to make sushi yourself at home if you are that way inclined, as well as a host of other delicious goodies. Recently, they had top-quality pieces of tuna and salmon for just R33 (from which I sliced about eight thick pieces of sashimi). That offer is probably over, but you can get the same 26-piece blue plate Beluga special to eat there or take away, also for R99. There's a 13-piece option too, as well as a few other menu items. Highly recommended.
  • Tank (Cape Quarter, De Waterkant Street, Green Point, 021 419 0007). Tank has, and always will get full marks for variety. In fact, the waiter said not to bother with the ordinary salmon and tuna rolls because we could have those anywhere.
  • "Try something different," he urged. So we did - crayfish rolls with cucumber and avo topped with caviar, red dragon rolls (real crab meat, cucumber inside, tuna and avo on top), prawn tempura rolls with avo and cucumber and sweet chilli and teriyaki sauces and rainbow rolls with a slight twist - asparagus and avo inside, salmon and tuna on top. Portions cost between R26 and R36 on the special, which is all sushi (and cocktails), half price every day from 12pm till 6pm.

  • Saul's Sushi @ Vegas (118 Main Road, Sea Point, 086 117 2857). Saul's chain of restaurants are all about value for money. At the moment, you can eat as much sushi as you like (unrestricted, so it includes sashimi, roses and so on) for R120, Mondays and Tuesdays 11am till 11pm, and two for the price of one specials, among others. The line-up will change slightly in December, but to keep up to date, see http://sushiv.sauls.co.za/index.html
